From Newbury With Love is a true story about the strength of human kindness. It tells of a friendship that pushed aside the Iron Curtain and, during the depths of the Cold War, saw two families form an unbreakable bond.

Slava Aidov was imprisoned in brutal conditions by the Soviet authorities for writing a leaflet. In
Chisinau, Moldova his young daughter Marina and wife Lera, were persecuted by the KGB, struggling for food and shunned by fearful friends. Life was bleak.

Then a 71-year-old bookseller, prompted by an Amnesty International letter-writing campaign sent them a postcard that simply read "With love from Newbury, Berks, England, Harold & Olive."

"It was like being visited by an angel." Lera Aidova

So began a 15-year written correspondence sharing a love of literature, music and ideas. Harold and Olive opened their hearts and lives with such wit and generosity, it sustained the Aidova family until the fall of the Soviet regime.

"To me Newbury was a fairytale place, where anything and everything is possible." Marina Aidova

From Newbury With Love will also include performances from Newbury Youth Theatre and pupils from the Aleccu Russo school in Chisinau, Moldova, who have been taking part in a cultural exchange and Facebook communication.
